California Vehicle Registration Fees and Resources
People search for a car registration fee calculator because the bill is hard to predict. This page explains what the DMV adds up, who charges what, then sends you to the DMV's own calculator for a real estimate.
Get an estimate from the DMV
The DMV publishes the only estimate that counts. Its tool covers new vehicles, vehicles from out of state, renewals, and changes of ownership. The result is an estimate because the final amount is set when the DMV records the transaction.
Who charges what
DMV charges
Set by the State of California and collected by the DMV. They depend on your vehicle, your county, and the transaction. They are the same whether you pay the DMV directly or through a registration service.

Clear pricing before you proceed
Every vehicle transaction is different. Our service fee depends on the type of paperwork and the amount of help your case needs.

California DMV fees, taxes, and penalties are separate from our service charge.
What makes up a car registration price
The total on a renewal notice or an original registration is a stack of separate fees. These are the main ones, described from the DMV's registration fees page.
Charged every year
- Registration fee
- A flat fee on every original registration and every yearly renewal. The DMV lists the current amount on its fee page.
- Vehicle license fee (VLF)
- Based on the value of the vehicle. The DMV figures it as a percentage of the purchase price or declared value, which drops over time on a set schedule.
- Transportation Improvement Fee (TIF)
- Tied to the value of the vehicle, in brackets. Higher value vehicles pay more.
- California Highway Patrol (CHP) fee
- A fixed yearly fee that supports the CHP. Commercial vehicles under the Commercial Vehicle Registration Act pay a higher version.
- County and district fees
- Local fees set by the county where the vehicle is kept, so two identical vehicles in different counties can owe different totals.
Depends on the vehicle
- Road Improvement Fee (RIF)
- Applies to zero emission vehicles from model year 2020 on at renewal, in place of the fuel taxes other vehicles pay at the pump.
- Weight and CVRA fees
- Commercial vehicles pay by declared weight. At 10,001 pounds or more, Commercial Vehicle Registration Act fees replace standard weight fees.
Depends on the transaction
- Transaction fees
- Flat fees for specific actions: a transfer, a replacement title, a replacement plate or sticker, a planned nonoperation filing, or a temporary operating permit.
- Use tax
- On a private party purchase or a vehicle brought in from another state, the DMV may collect use tax for the state tax agency, based on the price and where you live.
- Late penalties
- When a renewal or an original registration is late, the DMV adds penalties that grow with the delay: a percentage of the VLF plus weight fee, then flat late amounts for registration and CHP.
Amounts change when the law changes. The DMV's fee page is the source for current numbers; only the DMV determines the final amount due.
